Belgium Government Scholarship (ARES), 2026-2027
Applications are now open for the Belgian Government Scholarship for master’s and training courses. This program, funded by the Académie de Recherche et d’Enseignement supérieur (ARES), offers candidates the opportunity to pursue a fully funded one-year specialized bachelor’s or master’s degree, or a 2- to 6-month continuing education program. The training will take place within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in Belgium.
The scholarship is designed for nationals of eligible developing countries who have professional experience and are looking to further their skills in a development-related topic. ARES does not charge any fees at any stage of the application or selection process.
Scholarship Benefits
The Belgian Government Scholarship provides comprehensive coverage for selected candidates, including:
- International travel costs: Economy-class travel on an IATA-approved airline.
- Living allowance: A lump sum to cover living expenses during your study period.
- Full tuition fees (for bachelor’s and master’s degrees).
- Insurance fees (directly paid by ARES).
- Visa-related costs (for bachelor’s and master’s candidates).
- Indirect mission expenses (for continuing education only).
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a national, reside, and work in one of the eligible countries. The eligible countries include Tanzania, Benin, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, among others.
- Hold a diploma that is comparable to a graduate-level degree from a Belgian university for advanced master’s and continuing education courses.
- Have at least two years of relevant professional experience after graduation in an ARES partner country.
- Complete the application in the language in which the training is given and attest to a good knowledge of it.
- You must apply for only one training course.
- The candidate must have held the relevant academic degree for a maximum of 20 years at the time of the course.
How to Apply
To apply for this scholarship, applicants must create an account on the GIRAF platform and follow the instructions to submit their applications.
- Create an account on the GIRAF platform. ARES will validate the account, and you will receive a confirmation email to create your password.
- Once logged in, you can access the application form via the Competitive Calls tab of your GIRAF profile.
- You can save your form as a draft and complete it in multiple sessions.
- Once you click “Submit my application”, your application is sent to ARES, and you can no longer modify it.
The application deadline is September 19, 2025, at 12 pm Belgian time (UTC+1). ARES will notify all candidates of the selection results by email by June 2026.
